Even though many people find ways to live through it, [kw]sleep deprivation[/kw} is more damaging than you might think. Irritability, drowsiness and slow reflexes and reactions are the most common symptoms that we see, because these symptoms can occur with very small amounts of sleep deprivation. Even such a small amount of sleep deprivation as missing a few hours sleep one night can make driving, operating power tools and machinery as well as general physical activity more dangerous. Sleep deprivation for longer periods of time is even more dangerous; it can lead to hallucinations, heart and blood pressure problems and in some cases actually causes hyperactivity. To go without sleep for more than ten days can even be life threatening. Sleep deprivation causes hormone changes, and sometimes this leads to dramatic weight gain over a short amount of time. I don't have to tell you to avoid sleep deprivation, nearly everyone would do that by themselves if they had a choice. The amount of sleep we get each night is not always within our control. Our surroundings, like noise and temperature, can cause sleep deprivation. Sometimes anxiety can cause sleep deprivation as well, and this generally only makes anxiety worse. If you feel you are suffering from sleep deprivation it is important not just to get help and use a sleep aid for the sake of your health, but possibly the safety of others.

Are you in need of a long, good sleep? So are many other people, nearly half of all adults surveyed say that they are not getting as much sleep as they would like to. What may very well be the case is that they are not getting enough good sleep. Let me explain in further detail. A person will go through a ninety to one hundred minute sleep cycles, usually about five per night. When these cycles are interrupted or they are out of balance the result is very poor sleep quality, and not the good sleep you need to fully function. The reasons one may not be getting good sleep vary, it may be as simple as a poor sleep environment; that is your bedroom may be too hot or too cold, or to noisy, or there may be too much light. Anxiety, and prescription and nonprescription drugs can cause disruption in the sleep cycle. To get back to the good sleep that you need, you should trust in herbal supplements which contain calming herbs which support a healthy sleep cycle and are not disruptive to it. They also have few to no side effects, just good sleep.

Even though over the counter sleeping pills are common and easily obtainable, it does not mean that there is no risk in taking them. Sleep aids sold without a prescription still have the risk of addiction and dependency, and over the counter sleeping pills can also lead to overdose if not use properly. Unfortunately, over the counter sleeping pills have become people's first option when having trouble sleeping because of their convenience. It is possible to get to sleep without the use of over the counter sleeping pills, via natural methods. Relaxation techniques are very effective, and sometimes it is as simple as a change in your diet/lifestyle. Other than those, you can try a herbal supplement in the place of over the counter sleeping pills; herbal supplements rarely have any negative side effects and do not lend themselves to addiction or dependency. Over the counter sleeping pills should not be your first choice, you can get the sleep you need without the side effects you don't.
